Hesston Community

Child Development Center

More than 20 years ago, Hesston Community Child Care (HCCC) began taking preschool children to Schowalter Villa for intergenerational activities with its residents. The HCCC and Schowalter Villa formed a corporation in 2001 named Hesston Intergenerational Child Development Center, Inc. (HICDC). The new board worked cooperatively to design and build a new 8,000 square-foot facility adjacent to Schowalter Villa’s assisted living and health care center to house the child care’s central program.

This goal was achieved in 2005 with the construction of the new center and 2018 additional classrooms were added to Mullet Place allowing daily interaction between children and Schowalter Villa residents. Simple activities such as reading, storytelling, singing, conversation, and games allow young and old to move beyond interaction to true sharing.

HICDC has attained these goals:

• Bringing the community together to join generations
• Foster alliances that enhance education and promote lifelong learning
• Use the gifts of young and old to solve problems through service and learning
• Dismantle generational stereotypes

Hesston College

Hesston College in Hesston Kansas, a two-year liberal arts college, is part of our seamless campus adjoined by the “Journey of Life” walkway. Residents have the opportunity to experience life-long learning, by auditing classes at Hesston College. Not only an enjoyable and exciting opportunity for residents, but for college students as well.

Two annual events are co-hosted with Hesston College, a parade called the Journey of Life and the Festival of Creativity which involves numerous events covering several days. These activities incorporate all generations of the seamless campus, including residents, students, and children.

Residents enjoy interactions with college students in many different ways. The class curriculum involves students connecting with residents in Assisted Living and Health Care. Many enjoy one-on-one visits where they can spend time sharing and enjoying each other’s company.

Along with the activities mentioned above, Hesston College also encourages residents to attend their many cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities.

Hesston Golf Park

Hesston Golf Park is located a short distance from the Schowalter Villa campus with an 18-hole, par 71 layout, providing a great golfing experience for all skill levels.

Hesston Golf Park is no where near your typical, municipal, daily-fee golf club. From the par three’s that average 200-yards, to the fantastic, all weather practice facilities, to the intensive training programs available from the professional teaching staff, Hesston sets itself apart as among the best. Residents on campus enjoy the golf park not only for the meticulously kept course, but also for the exceptional value it offers.

Dyck Arboretum Of The Plains

The Dyck Arboretum of the Plains gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience wildflowers of the Great Plains in cultivation.

The Arboretum is part of the seamless campus community hosting buffalo grass meadows that surround a scenic lake, hundred of varieties of native and adaptable wildflowers, grasses, scrubs and trees.

The ever-changing garden is a beautiful backdrop for meditation. Add in the songbirds, butterflies, skies and clouds, cooling or warming breezes and you have the ingredients for creating, playing, discovering, exercising heart mind and soul. The half mile circle with benches provides new discoveries in all four seasons.

Schowalter Villa neighbors the arboretum to the south and east. Our latest building development in Lake Vista backs up to the Arboretum and overlooks the Window to the Prairie project. The arboretum will feature boroughs with season changing prairie grasses and wildflowers and in time host walking paths connecting the Schowalter Villa walkways to their walking trails.
